Artist's Statement

Donna Michelle Brazier

Much of my work reflects a personal insight into mental health problems. It is symbolic and generally I work in black and white using pen and pencil. I often produce works on A2 to any size paper. Some have described my work as edgy and distinctive. I believe I express really powerful emotion through art that cannot easily be put into words. I know my art has been therapeutic and has played a large part in my recovery, and also has helped others. Emotions such as anger, depression, confusion feeling lost to the world, struggling to survive, and the anguish of mental turmoil, can be seen in my art.

At the moment I work mainly for personal satisfaction which means I have had little opportunity to reflect on the view of others. I rarely explore working in colour and recognise that this is an area I might develop.

Whilst doing my degree I studied Claude Monet, to try and grasp colour in a more in-depth way but I have hardy ventured into the colourful world of Monet within my own practices. Also my love for working in sculpture has been another form of therapy, meaning this has led to lots of pieces of similar edgy artworks but in 3D, which was the most satisfying experience. Also producing a children's colouring book was another way of me trying to break out of my usual practice, I undertook this in 2013 which was exciting, challenging to say the least.
